Benefits of Doing Jigsaw Puzzles
There are so many benefits to doing jigsaw puzzles. Doing puzzles is similar to meditation; it helps you focus your mind. When concentrating solely on the puzzle, every day stresses and anxieties have no room to run rampant.
Memory improvement is another major benefit of puzzling; one must recognize patterns and shapes and remember where they belong in the wider picture. Studies show they are especially helpful for Alzheimer and dementia patients; the mental stimulation has been shown to delay a worsening of symptoms.
In addition to those skills, they help teach pattern recognition, shape sorting, color recognition, problem solving, and even patience.
Does Jen Recommend?
Yes! Do I have favorite? Maybe!
With the accessibility of laser cutters, wooden puzzles have exploded into the marketplace in recent years.
Wooden puzzles offer a more luxurious puzzling experience and a very different tactile feel compared to customary cardboard. They also offer greater longevity as they are not prone to bending and tearing.
That said, wooden puzzle prices run the gamut from slightly more expensive than customary cardboard puzzles (as in the puzzles above which were all under $30) to “I can’t even afford to rent this puzzle”. (See Stave puzzles – the Rolls Royce of wooden jigsaw puzzles)
Over all the wooden puzzle experience is definitely different and for me required a slightly different level of concentration.
I can’t say I really do have a favorite beyond always wanting my puzzles to have a matte finish. In this regard I believe Zen puzzles came closest, while the Nautilus puzzle was by far the shiniest and Dowdle fitting somewhere in between.
